Don't worry too much about the title. I'm fine, no one has died or anything like that. But I am in mourning.

I'm not mourning the death of someone I know; I'm mourning the loss of things I didn't know I'd lose when I went on exchange. Don't get me wrong, I love who I am and I love my exchange and I am so entirely grateful for this unimaginably wonderful opportunity. But my exchange is ending soon (sorry, I won't be sharing my return date with anyone who isn't family), and that's made me start to think about what I'll be returning to.

Since I went on exchange, my brother has moved out of our parents' house, my brother and his wonderful girlfriend had a baby, my nephew Wesley turned one and is starting to stand, and my parents have started eating and living healthier. These are, in some aspects, life-altering changes. But in the big picture, not much has changed. Except one thing: me.

I am such a completely different person now. I think differently, I speak differently, I look different, I feel different. The things that were important to me before I left aren't the same as they are now. My motivations behind doing things has changed. The way I carry myself is different. So, the fact that I'll be returning to an environment in which little to nothing has changed poses problems.

What am I mourning? I'm mourning the loss of the things that I cared about and the things that were most important to me before my departure on August 15th. I'm mourning the fact that I will probably never feel like a band kid again. Band was my life before I left, but when I return, I'm graduating and losing that part of my life.

I'm mourning the loss of my motivation for schoolwork. Before I left, school was the biggest driving influence in my life. Now that I have lived an existence in which I could focus on something other than school, I know I won't be able to go back to that.

I'm mourning the loss of a few of my friends. I'd like to say that exchange brings you closer to the friends you had, because you have more to talk about. I would really like to say that. But it just isn't true. Whether you like it or not, going on exchange means losing friends. Because you change as a person and your friends weren't there to witness you changing. So, when you talk, they say that you're so different and you're not the same. But they don't say it in a good way. The truth is, I'm glad I've changed. But I will miss the friendships I had before I left Oregon.

I'm mourning the loss of my brother's presence. No, he didn't die! But he is moving to a different state before I come home. I know I'll see him again, but it's going to be very hard to adjust to living somewhere where I can't just call up my brother and hang out with him. Connor, if you read this, I am so happy for you. I'm so excited to hear about your adventure and to know that you are doing something that will bring you joy. I love you so much and I wish you all the happiness in this magnificently large world.

Finally, and most of all, I'm mourning the loss of the person I was. Don't get me wrong, I love who I am now. I know what things I enjoy and what I don't, I have world experience, I have the knowledge that I can exist outside of a small town. But I will always miss the person I was before I got on that plane. I don't know why, but I will. There's just something about looking back and knowing you'll never be the same that is just kind of heartbreaking.

So, there it is. This post is rather melancholy and for that, I apologize. But I needed to get this off my chest and I needed to update my blog. Don't worry too much about me though. This is just kind of the way exchange goes; there are great, wonderful, fantastic times and there are lonely, depressing, and heartbreaking times. I'm glad I went on this exchange. I'm glad I've felt the emotions I've felt, even the bad ones.

Until next time, I love you guys.

So I want to apologize, yet again. I don't keep you guys updated nearly as much as I should. Just know, that I am doing a-okay.

A lot of stuff has happened. Unfortunately, I can't tell details, because it's a secret. Long story short, my return date is set and I am definitely panicking about it. I haven't been able to sleep very well, due to stress, but I'll be okay. I know that I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.

School is going well (both American and Korean). I started Kpop Dance classes and I absolutely love it. I forgot how much I really, truly enjoyed dancing. Plus, the repetition of Korean song lyrics is helping with my listening skills. I'm still not very good at Korean, which is rather upsetting to me. Everyone assures me that there's nothing wrong with not being good at Korean, but I still feel disappointed in myself.

I know that this is a really short entry, but I need to be poppin' off to bed.

Love you all!

I'm so sorry! I'm literally the WORST at keeping a blog probably in the history of blogs. I really do love it in South Korea, it's truly amazing here. And I'm really sorry to everyone that I don't update this blog every week. Again, I just want to thank everyone for their kind, unwavering support in this amazing journey.

Let's see what's happened. My host family is incredible! For a few weeks, I went swimming every day with my host dad, which was a really bonding experience for me and him. I also went on a small trip with some people from my swim class and helped take care of their three kids. It was a lot of fun and those kids were so sweet! My host mom is so sweet. I love spending time with her!

We spent three days in Japan, which was really cool. I got sick on the first day, unfortunately, so I spent most of the time sleeping a headache/sore throat away. It was a lot of fun either way. We were with a tour group, so we only saw Japanese people like twice, which was kind of disappointing. But when we went to a mall, a couple Japanese women saw me and asked where I was from. When I said America, they started chanting "U-S-A!" It was really amusing and slightly scary.

We also started taking Kpop dance classes, as required by my Rotary district here, which is super fun. I really missed dancing and learning about this aspect of the culture is really fun. I'm not a very good dancer, but it's still a ton of fun to try. The teachers at the studio are super amazing. They're very sweet and caring, and all of them are really talented. I really like being in those classes.

On Valentine's Day, a bunch of friends and I did Free Hugs to start out my Senior Project. It was SO much fun. It was so rewarding to see everyone smiling and laughing, because of something I put together. It was really fun to be able to hug people; it was really kind of festive.

That's all for right now. I'm really sorry this update took so long! I hope all is well wherever you are! Love you guys!

I haven't posted in SO long! I am really, super sorry! I had been feeling really down the past couple weeks and I didn't want to post any bad vibes out there; no need to worry and bum out my fans.

But, I'm back! I have officially been in the wonderful country of South Korea for four and half months! Wow! I cannot believe that I am half-way through my incredible year abroad. I truly don't want this year to end.

I had recently been having host family troubles, the details of which I feel unnecessary to post virally, which resulted in a low point in my exchange. All I wanted was to go back home and exist in a familiar place. But! I didn't. Because I can't let myself down like that.

So, in the midst of a bit of a rut, Christmas happened. It was a really strange experience for me. In the US, Christmas is huge and centered around family. Here, in Korea, Christmas isn't that big of a deal. It's also a holiday for couples. My friend and I went out anyway, despite being single, just because we wanted to experience the holiday in a new culture. It honestly felt like just another day, except there were couples EVERYWHERE. I also Skyped with my Mom and Dad, which was good. Skyping every now and again makes my family seem not so far away.

A few days after Christmas, I switched host families, which altered my entire outlook on my exchange. My new host family makes me feel like a daughter. My host Dad and I have been building a 1000 piece puzzle the last few days, which has really helped us bond. Plus, he invited me to go swimming with him everyday (at 5:30 in the morning! Yikes!) As a result of changing families and my perspective, my exchange is already a million times better.

And finally, New Years Eve/New Years. All I can say is wow. It was such an incredible experience! On New Years Eve, a couple other exchange students and I went to 서면 (Seomyeon) and gave free hugs. If you're unfamiliar with free hugs, here's a very quick explanation: you make signs that say "free hugs" on them, stand out in public, and hug strangers.

In Korea, skinship is a REALLY big thing. If you don't know someone very well, it is socially unacceptable and awkward to touch them. Free hugs was really fun, because I got to be an American and break the rules for a while (there was a group of Koreans doing it alongside us).

After I did free hugs, I went home and waited for the new year to start. At 6:00 am, my host family and I climbed up a mountain and watched the first sunrise of the year. That's a really big tradition here. You watch the first sun rise and give thanks and prayers for the new year. It was an incredibly exhausting and breath-taking (literally and figuratively) experience.

My exchange has finally turned into what I imagined it would: a year with nothe but happiness and new experiences. Much love goes out to you all! Thank you for your never-ending support and words of encouragement.

메리 그리스마스! 새해 복 많이 받으세요!

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!

Love, Madison

My best Korean friends!^^

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02519569548618910928noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1886853572810104317.post-57605597692373735902013-12-12T07:08:00.000-08:002013-12-12T07:08:10.449-08:00Well, December's HereHey everyone,

I'm really sorry that I'm so bad at posting. Remembering to do things hasn't always been my strong suit (pretty sure I was supposed to do the dishes before I left). Just know that if I don't post for a while, everything's fine. I think about everyone back home when I don't, which means I think about you guys a lot. I'll always be grateful for everything you all did to get me here.

Not much is happening. I have had most of the week of from school due to testing, so I've been relaxing and doing homework. I'm starting to understand Korean more, which makes me really happy. My home life is good. Another exchange student is living with me until I change host families, so it's been kinda crazy the past couple of weeks.

Mostly, I'm kind of bummed out right now. A lot of families don't celebrate Christmas here, so the most Christmas I get is at fast food restaurants or malls. Christmas has always been a very special time for me, so right now is really hard. I miss my family a lot and I miss the feeling of Christmas.

But, I know this is all just a part of the exchange. I'll get past the home sickness, because I'm halfway around the world and that is, quite frankly, awesome.

I hope you're all having a wonderful holiday season. Love and miss you!

MadisonAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02519569548618910928noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1886853572810104317.post-62461830053333103402013-11-29T17:54:00.000-08:002013-11-29T17:54:01.643-08:00Three Months, Seoul, and a Skype Date!Hi guys!

WOW! I can't believe I've been here for over three months! I'm a third way through with this incredible, life-changing experience; inconceivable! I know that it's only been three short months, but I can already tell that I am a different person as a result of my exchange.

Since I have been here for three months, I finally got to Skype my parents! It was amazing to see and hear them again. They're still just as loving, kind, hilarious, and caring as they were before I left; heck, they might even have increased in all of these traits! I'm glad that I followed Rotary's 3 month rule, because it made seeing my parents on Skype a lot easier. It certainly didn't make me more homesick, which I know it would have if we had Skyped earlier.

A few days ago, all of the inbounds went to Seoul! It was AMAZING! We went to Ever Land, which was an incredible amusement park, and to the DMZ (the De-Militarized Zone)! It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. We went about 500m underground (sorry guys, I started using the metric system) and walked through the third tunnel that the North Koreans had built in attempt to invade South Korea. It was amazing to physically be in a part of history. Also, everyone kept hitting their heads on the ceiling of the tunnel, except me, because I'm so short. Not really important, but I thought it was really funny.

While we were up at the DMZ, it started snowing. A lot. My friend from Louisiana had never seen snow before, so I thought it was really awesome. Plus, we got into a snowball fight with some people from China. I love the snow, so much, and getting to play in it while at an important historical sight was very, very memorable.

On a side note, I will be changing host families some time this month, but I'm not sure when. So, if you're sending me mail, be aware that I might have changed families before I receive your mail.

All in all, this exchange has already been life-changing and amazing. Thank you to everyone who helped me get here! Thank you especially to the Rotary Club of Monmouth/Independence and District 5100 for giving me this chance.

Until next time!

MadisonAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02519569548618910928noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1886853572810104317.post-18894555551220256112013-11-09T01:44:00.001-08:002013-11-09T01:44:16.277-08:00Being Sick and Other ThingsHey everyone,

The past few days have been kind of crummy, because I caught a really bad cold. I actually had to stay home from school yesterday and go to the doctors. Don't worry, they only prescribed Tylenol, so I'm fine. I'm feeling a lot better today, which is definitely a good thing.

So, it's almost been three months since I arrived in Korea. Believe me, I'm having so much fun here that I rarely have time to stop and breathe. I'm at this weird place in my exchange where I'm pretty much freaking out that it's been almost three months. I'm freaking out partially because I've been here for close to three months, which means that I only have six months left and then my exchange and new and unique life here ends. I'm also freaking out because I've been here for nearly three months, which means I still have to wait for half of a year before I can hug my parents again. It's a weird place to be emotionally. But don't worry, I'll push through; I always do.

There's something else I wanted to ask you all. I love mail. Literally, it is on my top three favorite things in the world. Even back in the US when I got mail, I'd freak out (just ask my parents). So, I have a request. As it is almost Christmas (sorry for everyone in the States, Thanksgiving already happened here, so Christmas is the next holiday), I was hoping that everyone who reads my blog, or even just a stranger who wants to put a smile on someone's face, could send me a letter. It doesn't even have to be a letter. It could be a card or just a note, anything. I mean, if you want to send me presents too, I wouldn't object.

At the end of this I'll post my current address and I'll update my blog and Facebook if that changes. Just any kind of mail would honestly make my day.

I hope all is well in your lives!

Madison

P.S. To the members of the Rotary Club of Monmouth/Independence, I am so sorry that I have not been in more contact with you all. I have legitimately been looking for a post card since my first day here, but I haven't found any or haven't had the money at the time to buy one. I am so sorry! Just know that all is well on my exchange! And I am still eternally grateful for this incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you have given me. Thank you all!

Unfortunately, they don't celebrate Halloween in Korea, so it just felt like a normal day. I did watch a few of my favorite Halloween movies, but it just wasn't the same. People at my school understood and knew it was Halloween, so a few came up to me and wished me a happy one, but mostly it was just a normal day. I did get invited to lunch with a group of new friends next week, which is super exciting. Mostly because of food, but also because of new friends.

I started teaching US History to the future US Outbounds for my District (3660), which is so exciting. They kind of looked at me funny when I got all excited about high school in America, but I'm really excited to get the chance to teach and talk about home.

Not much has changed or happened since my last post, so I'm sorry that this one is short.

I love you all!
I went on my school's trip this week and all I can say is wow! We went to 제주도 (Jeju Island)! It was amazing! I'm so exhausted from all the fun haha.

We arrived on Monday around 9am, got on a tour bus, and went to a museum. The museum was pretty alright, kind of a boring-ish way to start off the trip, but I still had fun. They had a photographer come to take pictures of the whole trip, but in my opinion he wasn't all that good. When it was windy, he would face us so the wind was blowing our hair in our faces, which is just a silly thing to do. And he would have some people in the shadows and others in the light, which was bothersome. Darn you, Mom, for making me notice this stuff!

After we went to the museum, we went to the beach. Guys, it was so beautiful. It was like being back in Oregon, I swear. Although, the sky was too blue and it was too warm to be the Oregon coast, but it was still very similar and made me very, very happy. Afterwards, we had lunch.

Then, we went to THE COOLEST thing ever. It's called Jeju Nanta and it was amazing. Connor, if you read this, I'm taking you there one day. What it was was a play (kind of) where they made music solely through random objects (i.e. no typical drums or percussion; they used pots and pans, buckets, knives, etc.) and it had little to no speaking. It was so amazing! The way they performed in sync and with such passion was breath-taking. After that, we went to a tree garden. I saw soooo many trees! It was like Oregon, except not with pine trees. That was pretty nice, since I don't get to see very many trees anymore. Then we went to a weird cabin/hotel place for the night; it was strange.

The next day, we hiked up a mountain. It has the best name ever. Ready? It's called Halla Mountain. (Sorry if you don't find it as funny as I do). I climbed up there without complaining and without stopping. I was one of the first people up there, and wow, it was stunning. My Mom always told me on hikes "it's always worth it." Even 5,000 miles away, she's still right.

After we went hiking, we went on a boat ride. But not just any boat ride, no. This was one where we were in speedboats and the driver would go super fast and then turn and stop quickly; so much fun. My hood fell down in the middle of it, so by the end of the ride, my hair was soaked! I really, really loved it!

Then, we went to this very strange amusement park thing, that wasn't an amusement park. It was like a museum, but with no artifacts and only had miniature-sized buildings of places from around the world. It was very odd. By the way, I totally planked on some pharaohs laps (pictures included). Afterwards, we went to a waterfall. Apparently it was supposed to be really cool, but it was very tiny and kind of made me giggle. I wish I could take all of them to Multnomah Falls!

The next day (yesterday), we went to a lava tube, which was really cool for me. I loved the feeling of being in a place where lava used to be oozing by, carving-out and creating a different place simultaneously. Plus, it was pretty there.

After that, we hiked up another mountain. We're up to two mountains now, guys. But it was worth it, again. Being up on top of a mountain on an island is indescribably beautiful. It was like looking down on the whole world, and not just one island. I love hiking, but I was seriously exhausted by the end of that hike.

After we hiked, we went to something called Pony Valley. It was like a circus, but with horses. I felt kind of bad for the horses, in all honesty. After sixteen years of trying to go to the circus, I'm not too happy I went. Although, I did see a trapeze artist, which was awesome. Afterwards, we went and rode horses! It was only for like 4 minutes each, but I still got to ride an horse again, which made me a very happy Madison.

When we finished that, we hiked up another mountain! SO MUCH HIKING! It was a lot of fun though, because this mountain was not nearly as big as the others were. Funny story, my homeroom teacher, principle, and I were walking and a group of school boys were walking the other way and they started singing something in Korean. My homeroom teacher burst out laughing, looked at me, and said "They said you're very pretty." Kinda made the hike a lot better. That, and I had a ton of friends with me and we were taking pictures everywhere and having a great time.

Last night, was really cool, because there was a talent show. And yes, I did participate! I was going to do the Thriller, but I only had half an hour to practice, sooo I sang a song instead. I sang Me and Bobby McGee, because I've always loved hearing my Mom sing it. I did not do it as much justice as she does, though. Everyone thought I did really well and were all very sweet about it.

This morning, we went on yet another hike. I was feeling kind of sick though, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have. It was still very beautiful and VERY exhausting, as always. After that, we went to the airport and flew home.

This past week was amazing. I got closer to my schoolmates, made friends, went on adventures, and earned the nickname Mosquito (long story). I'm so, so glad that I got to go. Well, I hope all is well wherever you are! Love you!

I'm sorry that I haven't updated in a while. I just get so caught up in what's going on that I forget to tell you all about it. Let's see where I should start.

About a week ago I went to the ~ing conference, which stands for...You know, I never actually memorized what it stands for! Anywho, it was amazing! There was people from all around the world there and I definitely made life-long friends. We were all divided into three groups: Politics and Human Rights, Arts and Culture, and Environment. I was in the Politics group. I didn't actually get to stay for the entirety of the conference, but it was still wonderful.

I actually made a rap song for my group, with the help of others, because of a typo for our Power Point presentation. I wish I could have seen Jenny (Inbound from America) and Matika (from Canada) perform it, but I didn't get the chance.

After that, all of the Inbounds for D3660 went to the Lantern Festival for our first trip; it was amazing. I got so close to everyone in the group and overcame a lot of differences with them. The Lantern Festival was so beautiful. The pictures I took don't even begin to cover it! I will post the pics at the end of this post so you all can get an idea of what it was like. I can't wait to take my family there one day.

This week, I didn't have school, because of exams. Exams here are like the SATs in the US, except on steroids. They're seriously terrifying. I was told to stay home, because I would have absolutely nothing to do and everyone needed to focus on the tests. So, I hope everyone survived!

Tonight, I think, is a celebration for the college that the Inbounds take classes at. We were all invited, which is awesome! My Taekwondo teacher doesn't speak English, so he called it a fiesta; that's right, my Korean Taekwondo teacher speaks fluent Spanish. How cool is that!

Well, that's all for now. I pinky promise that I'll post every week again! Love going out to all of you!

Wow, has it really been two weeks since my last post? I'm so sorry! Time really does fly when you're having fun. Let's see if I can remember everything that's happened in the past couple weeks.

Chosuk, which is the Korean Thanksgiving, was wonderful. My host family took me up to my Dad's Mom's house, which was really nice. My host Grandmother and host Aunt are very, very kind. They kept trying to give me food, even if I said I was full. Seeing them really made me feel like family.

The next day we spent 7 hours driving home; it usually only takes 3. Traffic was definitely horrible. The day after that, my host Mom took me to a public bath house. It was very different. I was really hesitant to go at first, but I'm really glad I did. I really think that it's something everyone should experience at least once. The next day, my host Dad took me and my friend, Nick, up to a temple.

I really love going to temples. I may not be a religious person, but I feel very in-tune with all that is going on around me when I'm at a temple. It really gives me a nice perspective of "there's always a different way of life than your own."

Last week all of the Inbounds started Taekwondo classes. And oh my, that is some really difficult stuff. I'm really glad I only have it 2 days a week, otherwise I think I'd be dead. School is really nice, as are all of the people there. Language school is tough for me, but I'm learning and getting better.

Well, that's all for right now. I'll be sure to post more frequently from now on! Love you all!

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile, things got busy. As of today, I have been in South Korea for one month. It simultaneously feels like I've been here for much longer and so much less. It's funny how time works.

I started my Korean language classes last Monday. It's really hard and it makes me feel kind of stupid, but I know that by the end of my exchange I'll be fluent. I haven't started my Taekwondo classes yet, kind of dissapointed by that. But we start next week on the 24th.

My host family is so amazing. From what my host sister has told me, they have no complaints about me. They bought an oven and a toaster just so I can cook American food. They're really nice to me and are really flexible with my schedule.

Now for some America-related news! After much contemplation, I have decided that graduating this year with the class of 2014 is what's best for me. I had been getting very homesick a lot and I now know that it was because I knew I may never see my friends again. So, my Mom and the wonderful staff at Central High School worked to re-enroll me as a student. I am now taking three online classes so that I can graduate.

Everything is going really well and I'm really happy. I hope all is well in your lives!

Lots of love,

Sorry it's been a few days since my last post, the last couple days have been kind of rough. I had a pretty crummy first day of school, a decent day yesterday, and today was really hard.

I know that I shouldn't pay attention to it, but the fact that all of the people I know and love are back in school without me is rather heartbreaking. Almost all of my friends graduate this year without me. I didn't know that I would find it that hard. Plus, I woke up at six and got really excited to go to jazz band. My heart sunk at the true realization that I have to live without my other family for a year.

And to make things worse, I still haven't gotten my trumpet yet. Turns out customs needs 2 papers that I have to rely on someone else getting for me before they will mail me my trumpet. Oh, and did I mention that customs can keep my trumpet for up to 45 days? Lovely.

I hope all of you are well! And don't worry about me, just a tiny rough patch.

Love,

Well, tomorrow is my first day of school. As always, I have the first day of school jitters, meaning I won't be able to sleep very well tonight. But that's okay, it's always been that way for me.

I have to start my presentations tomorrow, which I'm not as excited for. I don't usually get nervous about presenting things, but this time it's different. It's in front of people who will be judging me the second I walk through the doors, deciding if I'm good enough to converse with. At least I get to presnt in English.

That's all for now, updates to come soon!

Madison Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02519569548618910928noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1886853572810104317.post-59884883436398706632013-08-27T06:00:00.003-07:002013-09-01T05:08:10.238-07:00The "I pooped" Story...Okay, I know the title of this entry sounds weird and that it's kind of long, but bare with me and read to the end; this is hilarious.

Yesterday, I was riding the subway with all of the Inbound Exchange Students. As the subways can get very crowded, four of us were slightly apart from the rest of the group. I, believing I am a funny person, decided to tell a story my best friend, Kira, had shared with me before I left.

My friends Nick, from Wisconsin, and Nicole, from Nevada, are Supernatural fans (a hit TV show). I told them the story that Jared Padelecki, the actor who plays Sam, had told during a Q&A he had. His story goes something kind of like this:

Jared, his wife, and his friend are all boarding a train in Europe. Jared and his friend are in charge of getting all of the luggage on the train. Just as the doors close, Jared realizes he left his wife's bag on the platform. The train starts moving and there's no way that he can get the bag. Under normal circumstances, this would have been okay, but it was during a high-security time and the bag had all of his wife's new-bought, expensive clothing in it.

Jared is freaking out and searches the train trying to find someone to help him so that his wife's bag doesn't "get incinerated". Unfortunately, Jared can't find anyone who works on the train, so he goes back to the door in a panic. He looks down and finds the emergency brake (note that they're now in the middle of nowhere). So, what does Jared do? He pulls it. The train comes to a complete stop and a member of the train crew rushes up to him. She doesn't speak English natively, but she asks Jared what is wrong and if he's okay; she's genuinely concerned.

Jared explains why he stopped the train and the woman asks him "You stopped the train...for a bag?" Jared tells the woman that he's very sorry for stopping the train. The woman responds with "Oh no, you didn't just stop this train; you stopped ALL of the trains." (If you want to hear his whole story, I'll post a link).

So, after I tell this story to my friends Nick, Nicole, and Valerie (she's from Florida and has only been here for a day), I proceed to tell them that I've been trying for two weeks to find the emergency brake, but I can't. Nick asks me why I've been looking and I say "Because it would be really funny if I can say "On my last day in South Korea, I stopped all of the trains in Busan." Luckily, there isn't a emergency brake; they have an SOS walkie-talkie that connects to the conductor.

Now this is where it gets really funny. From this point on, all of us are trying to come up with valid reasons to get the train stopped. The only one any of us remember is this one. Someone simply asked "What if you say in a really upset voice 'I pooped'?" As we are all immature, this is hilarious to us. As usual, I try to out-funny them all.

My plan was to act out talking into the walkie-talkie and say "Hello? I pooped and it's everywhere and the passengers are really upset, because it's getting in their shoes." Of course, I was already laughing and the rest of the sentence was hilarious to me, so all I could get out over and over again was "Wait, wait. So I'll say 'Hello? I pooped" before uncontrollable laughter ensued. Mind you, we're on a crowded subway while this is all happening.

Before I finally get out my sentence, I've repeated the statement "I pooped" like 20 times. The entire time this has been happening, there was a Korean woman standing next to us. I think she understood enough English to understand "I pooped." I say this only because at the next stop, the woman practically ran to the other side of the car, opened the door, and changed cars.

I made a Korean woman think I pooped myself on the subway. She probably told her family, friends, and coworkers. I will forever be remembered to her as that foreigner who pooped their pants on the subway.
There are things you couldn't possibly imagine as different; like smells. In your head, you can't predict the way a place will smell, so you assume it smells the same. But when you get to that far-off place you've never really been to, things are different in ways you never would have thought.

Like the way it smells after it rains. In Oregon after it rains, there is a soft aroma of pine trees and grass. It smells like peace and safety; like happiness. Here after it rains, all you smell is weighted down pollution and sadness. It's as if in the sun, the difficulties of city-life are easily masked, but the rain wipes away the illusion. After it rains here, all I can smell is the sadness and filth of a dying planet. I never thought that the smell of rain would be that powerful to me.

Something else you'd never expect to be different is the way the Earth moves beneath your feet. This is even more subtle than a smell, but just as powerful and undeniably different. Back home, you can almost feel the Earth guiding you, urging you to wander and explore. It pulls your feet towards it and persuades you to continue on your journey. In this massive city, covered by skyscrapers and roads, it is as if the Earth has gone silent. The city is always making noise, drowning out the quiet murmur the world naturally emits. You can no longer feel the Earth moving and beckoning you to follow it.

There is one last thing I wasn't truly prepared for: the noise. Now that's not to say that in my home-town there is no noise; it's just the noises are different. In Independence, you hear the sound of music blaring from the open windows of cars as they drive down Main Street. You hear the birds chirping and dogs barking. You can hear your neighbor's hose as they water a flowerbed and inevitably flood your backyard. There's that ever distant sound of the sawmill working before and after the hours they promised the town they'd work. If you stay up late enough, you can hear the train go by at 3 am. And sometimes, it's as if the world has stopped and you don't hear any noise. Those are the times you think that you are the only person left in the world, or perhaps that armageddon has begun.

In Busan, you hear the never-ending sound of cars driving by, with the not-so-occasional honk of an angry driver. You hear the subway going by and people talking. You hear music play every so often. The difference between here and home is that the noise here never ceases. You never really feel alone, which in some aspects is good. The noise here is like a never-ending wind blowing past you; it doesn't hurt you, it just never stops.

Please don't misunderstand me, I love being in Busan. I love the culture and being somewhere new. I love living an adventure and meeting new people and experiencing new things. It is just the subtle differences that make being away from my quiet farming town difficult.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02519569548618910928noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1886853572810104317.post-50518938535692706842013-08-19T00:10:00.001-07:002013-08-19T00:10:23.691-07:00My High School And Other ThingsHi!

I visited my high school today! It takes about an hour by subway to get there. If you don't know, I'm going to Busan Jungang Girl's High School. I met the principal, vice principal, and my classmates. When I introduced myself, everyone clapped and giggled. When I said I was from America, they all went "Oooooh." It was very different. I start school on September 2nd, while everyone else started today. I won't start until next month, because I don't have a uniform or backpack.

I was very sad to find out that there is only one music class at my high school and it's for first grade (I'm in second). As most of you all know, music is the biggest influence in my life. Hopefully, I will find a band to play trumpet in. If not, I was told that I could be found a place to practice trumpet. It was honestly very upsetting news, because band would have made making friends easier.

I have to do a 30 minute presentation about myself, Independence, Oregon, and the USA for each of the 12 classes at my high school. I am very excited because I get to do the presentation in English!

It is very hot in S. Korea. It is about 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit). I am NOT used to the heat and sweating so much; it's very gross. But it is beautiful and I love it here.

I love and miss you all!

Right now it's about 11:30 am on August 16th. I'm sitting in my room in Haeundae. I'm in South Korea guys. For real. Last night I think I went to bed early, since my host family was still awake and spending time together. The only reason I went to bed was because it was 1 am and I had been awake for about 24 hours straight.

My family is very, very nice. I've been in their home for less than 12 hours and I already feel like I'm part of the family. My host dad is very kind and speaks English pretty well. He told me that if I need anything, I ask him or mom and that I am his daughter. I feel very loved and very safe. And last night when my Appa (dad) picked me up at the airport, he gave me three roses. I'm very glad that they're my family.

I have pictures of the inside of my house (I can't leave because I don't remember the code to get back in the apartment.) and I wanted to share them with you all. I'm on the 12th floor and I can see the ocean from my bedroom window. My home is very comfortable and, just like the rest of Busan, is very beautiful.

Thank you all for helping me get here! I couldn't have done it without your help and support.

Love,

Madison

Last night I stayed up until 3 am packing. I'm not really sure why I did; I mean I could have just packed the rest of my things today, right? It's really weird knowing that by tomorrow I'll be half way across the world. It's kind of scary.

But I know I'll be fine and all of this hard work will be worth it. I'm both excited and terrified about leaving, but I guess that's normal.

Next time I update my blog, I'll be in South Korea. See you then.

I leave for S. Korea in four days. How insane is that? 10 months ago I found out I was going on exchange, and now I leave in four days. Crazy how time flies.

Yesterday was my Send-Off Party. I can honestly say that I've never been more emotionally exhausted than I was last night. It was a lot of fun and great to see everyone one last time before I leave. But knowing that I won't get to see everyone for almost a year was really sad. But a good kind of sad. I can't explain it, but it was really fun and happy and sad.

Well, that's it for now! More updates to come.

I have a week left until my exchange begins! I am more than excited than I can express!

Also, I am in desperate need of work or donations. Things have turned out to be a little more expensive than originally thought, and I am reaching out to all of you. I would be more than grateful to have an extra job to work to earn my funds, or a simple donation.

If you can help me, please contact me. My e-mail address is madisonmccammon@hotmail.com. Or message me on Facebook.

Thank you all for everything you have already done!

I leave for South Korea in 8 days! I will be leaving from the PDX airport at 11:30 am on August 14th. That's next Wednesday! I cannot believe that this is actually happening!

For everyone who has donated their time, money, and/or energy to help me get to S. Korea, I am eternally grateful. Without all of your support and kindness, this far-off dream probably never would have become a reality.

Thank you all so much! Updates soon to follow.

So I finally have an idea of when I'll leave for Korea! I'm probably going to leave on 24th of August. I'm so very excited! I'll keep you all updated as more information comes my way.

Lots of love,

There's not really a whole lot to report right now. I started work last week and have been out of school for a while. I'm awaiting documents from South Korea to complete my Visa application form and was awarded an incredible scholarship through Rotary to help me pay for my plane ticket. That's about it! I'm so insanely grateful for this amazing opportunity and am so thankful for the people who are helping make it happen.

Much love!

Tomorrow marks the beginning of my last week of high school with my current graduation class. I am deeply saddened, and yet thoroughly excited to begin my exchange life. I have some documents I need to fill out still, some fundraising I need to do, and learn a ton more Korean. It's really weird to think that, well, after this week my life is going to completely change.

I'll keep you all updated as the process continues. Lots of love!
